Laura Frantz and Joan Hochstetler - Tea Party - and giveaway!

This week on Colonial Quills we're celebrating the release of Love's Reckoning and Crucible of War with authors Laura Frantz and Joan Hochstetler!

Love's Reckoning by Laura Frantz
Publisher: Revell

On a bitter December day in 1784, Silas Ballantyne arrives at the door of blacksmith Liege Lee in York County, Pennsylvania. Liege endeavors to keep him in Lancaster by appealing to an old tradition: the apprentice shall marry one of his master's beautiful daughters. Which one will claim Silas's heart--In this sweeping family saga, one man's choices in love and work, in friends and enemies, set the stage for generations to come. This is the Ballantyne Legacy.

Crucible of War by J.M. Hochstetler
Crucible of War
J.M. Hochstetler
Publisher: Sheaf House

When she returns to New York, Elizabeth Howard is drawn ever deeper into the intrigues that swirl around British General William Howe. Brigadier General Jonathan Carleton is transferred to Gates's army in the upper Hudson Valley where his old nemesis, British General Burgoyne closes in on Saratoga. With decisive battles looming on both fronts, Elizabeth and Carleton face a crucible of war that tests their mettle, faith, and the very limits of their love.

Please join us in celebration of these two releases at the Golden Plough Tavern in York, Pennsylvania. And if you like, come in one of the characters from either book, or someone from the American Revolutionary period.

  1. I'm most honoroed to join you today at the Golden Plough! I am Elizabeth Howard, and my dear friend Isobel Vander Groot recently wrote me that with her family and fiance she had a lovely luncheon there recently on their way to Lancaster when they fled Philadelphia. General Howe was poised to take the city, and you can imagine that all was in the greatest distress and confusion.

Of course, the Vander Groots pressed Aunt Tess and me to join them at dear Mr. Lamb's estate, but we have other obligations until it becomes too dangerous to stay. And then my journey will take Caleb and me north of Albany, New York, to Jonathan, and I am most eager to see him again! The separations we have endured throughout this war have tried us most painfully.

Please do pass me a cup of tea, and I'll have a slice of that delightful Providence Cake. How is everyone doing today? Quite well, I hope!

  3. Both of these books sound wonderful! I appreciate the info. My family is from PA, not too far from the York area, so family visits and field trips took us to York on occasion. I love that whole area.

Can't wait to read these books. Thank you for offering the giveaway!

  15. Hello, Ladies! Laura, always wonderful to see you and Joan, it's so nice to meet you - The Crucible of War looks like a wonderful book!

The 18th Century is such a romantic time period - I love reading books set in this era, especially because Patriotism ran high and people lived and fought for God and Country. It's so important that we keep this histroy alive as a means of planting those seeds into the hearts and the minds of this current generation and those to follow! Thank you for doing that, ladies. :)

    2. Good morn, Amy! We're so glad you've joined us for tea and cake while we enjoy many sweet airs from the fiddle of a certain Mr. Ballantyne. How stirringly he plays, putting me in mind of the Scottish Highlands, which I long to visit as Jonathan hails from there as well. Although he promised that one day he would take me there, alas, I fear it will ever be far too dangerous for either of us to set foot on the British Isles since we are both now deemed traitors to the crown.

Eden, it's so nice to meet you in person. You're dress is so beautiful! I've heard you and Silas have quite the romantic tale, and I can't wait to hear all about it.

I'm very pleased to meet you, Elizabeth, and I hope that you will accept my apology for any grief my uncle may have caused you and the citizens of Philadelphia. He and my father have endured much criticism over the war, and I and my sisters have had a hard time finding suitors because of it. But all of that is in the past, and John--dear John, he saved me. One day you and Eden will have to come and visit us in Ireland. I'll plan a tour of Westport for us, and we'll watch plays in the new theatre.

    2. Jennifer, thank you so much for telling us about Beyond the Mask! I can't wait to see it! There are so few movies set during the colonial era, so it's a real treat to find a good one!

  30. Good Day Ladies!

So very happy to be here! The trip took an unexpected turn as we had problems with the coach this morning; stuck in mud. The autumn weather in New York has taken a cooler--and much more rainy turn these last few days. I believe Mrs. Marvin can attest to that!

Mrs. Huntley-Talvis, I am so grateful to you for your patience in so many things; you are such a gracious hostess!

I was quite beside myself when Elizabeth and I were invited to this lovely gathering! But she is used to her Aunt Tess by now. I know the dear girl has arrived well ahead of me, as we left in separate coaches--she thought it better to do so considering such uncertain times.

I would like to congratulate both ladies on the release of such well-written books as Love's Reckoning and Crucible of War-- It will be a pleasure to read both series!

I see so many familiar faces....Adalia and Morgan. So very glad to see them all the way from Charleston. And she is wearing that lovely strand of black pearls! And how is it that General Carleton could join us? I'm quite pleased indeed...

I see Eden... and Jemma...and it seems Margaret has torn herself from her duties at Hope Rising too! Why it looks as if everyone has managed to come by. How delightful! Does anyone know if Elspeth has decided to stop in?

I will mingle, but I must find my niece Elizabeth, and should like to speak with Eden. But it will be difficult to avoid the temptation of that delicious looking cake. I must have a cup of sassafras tea first!

    1. Oh, Aunt Tess, I was so worried about you! I'm so sorry to hear the coach got stuck, but with this rainy weather I'm not surprised. I'm so relieved that you've arrived safely. Do sit by the fire and have a cup of tea and slice of cake to restore yourself. Silas Ballentyne has taken a brief break, but I believe he'll be back shortly to play the fiddle for us again. And how I wish Jonathan were here to join him! The two of them play more sweetly than any mortal I've ever heard. It's surely the music of heaven!

    2. I am very grateful for Mrs. Huntley-Talvis's hospitality to our guests this morning. And I thank the innkeepers so much for allowing me to lie down in one of the back chambers and rest.

Hoping to be more sociable this evening and get to chat with Eden, Adalia, and all the other lovely folks at the tea party!

    3. I agree with you, Carrie, and I'm glad you've been able to get a good rest!

    4. Hope your rest does you good, Carrie, and you are feeling much improved come evening. We'll keep the tea warm for you...

    5. Welcome, Mistress Pat! I was so hoping you'd come:) If Elspeth appears, we will evacuate the premises and party elsewhere. OH MY! Silas will see to that:) He has no great fondness for loose, conniving women... But I digress!

How kind of you to mention Margaret Hunter! Yes, she is here in Quaker gray but wearing a celebratory smile, nonetheless. Sigh. I think we are all in need of a party this rainy September day!

      Delete
    6. Yes, I had to go around and close all the windows today in anticipation of cooler weather!

Makes for particularly good reading, don't you think?

  31. Dearest Tess, I sorry for your difficult journey by coach, but alas you have arrived safely, and we are most happy to have you now here among us. Let me pour you that cup of sassafras tea...

  32. Oh you are angels all, ladies! Aye, 'twas wishful thinking on my part Elizabeth, that I believed I should see your dear Carleton here.

I hope you shall recover soon, Mistress Carrie. Indeed, the innkeepers have been more than hospitable!

    1. I'm joining in your wishful thinking, Aunt Tess. lol! Jonathan is unfortunately very engaged in the campaign to stop General Burgoyne from taking Albany and moving down the Hudson to New York to split our colonies in twain, so he cannot get away for more pleasant pursuits. I'm traveling directly to join the Rangers at Bemis Heights when I leave here. Indeed, I also promised to attend Blue Sky when her and Charles's baby is born, so I must hasten to reach them soon as she is due to deliver very shortly. Should my parents and Abby arrive at Boston before I do, please do give them my deepest love and assure them I'll be on my way home as soon as possible!

  34. I have heard so many things about these two books! It seems that so many people are excited for them! I have never read any books by Laura Frantz or J M Hochstetler myself, but Katie McCurdy (Legacy of a Writer) says they are both very excellent. Theses books sound very intriguing, especially Love's Reckoning.

Thank you so much for the announcements and giveaways! :D

Giving her Meadowsweet tea and keeping the drapes on the tester bed closed mostly, poor lady. 43. What a delightful tea party we've had ladies! I'm so grateful for every one who could stop by, even if only for a little while. I'm as excited to see who will win the books and Pat's lovely print as you all are. :-)

Now I also will bid you adieu as I must prepare to leave early tomorrow morn to journey to the Hudson River, then north beyond Albany to the Rangers' camp. Times are so uncertain, and we know not what the future holds for our country in the war against Britain, and also for Jonathan and me and Charles and Blue Sky as they await the arrival of their babe. Aunt Tess, godspeed on the road to Boston, and God willing, I'll meet you there soon. Blessings to everyone!

  44. Elizabeth, Eden and dear ladies...

It was such a treat to spend time with you in such a delightful place. Truly it drew quite a crowd, which makes it all the better! I shall follow soon Elizabeth, and meet you in Boston if all fares well. I have taken quill in hand and penned a missive to your dear parents. I hope it reaches them safely.

Eden, I have been absolutely charmed by your graciousness; and I do wish Margaret lived closer--she is a woman after my own heart--as you both are! God richly bless and keep you and Silas both.

Laura and Joan--THANK YOU!!! Your books are amazing!

And thank you for inviting me to join you today Mrs. Huntley-Talvis and Mistress Carrie-- (I'm a bit puzzled by visitors not being able to at least leave their calling cards after reaching 100 guests, however. Certainly the Golden Plough has held more!

And good night to you, Governor Lee! (And I hope Mistress Carrie is feeling better soon too.)

Hugs and God bless you all!
