I recently read "Longitude" by Dava Sobel. What I learned is how pitifully little I knew about navigation during Colonial times! Anyone writing about sailing during this time period ought to give this book a read-through.Not written in dry facts and not a fascinating story, this book falls somewhere in the middle. It could have been shorter, it drags in places. It gives giving the reader a sense of what was going on behind the scenes in England - politically speaking - as well as showing the life-and-death need for the advances in navigation that were made between the mid and late 1700s.
The story of John Harrison is a good study in life-long dedication to excellence and persistence in the face of adversity. For those reasons alone, it's worth the read.
