Tea Party for Rita Gerlach, C.J. Chase and Kelly Long and a Celebration of Washington's Birthday!

Welcome to our Tea Party in honor of Rita GerlachC.J. Chase, and Kelly Long, three amazing authors!

This is George Washington's birthday!

Come in and have a seat!  We have an assortment of teas that have come from the Netherlands!  And terrific desserts and sandwiches for our guests!

Rita Gerlach
Rita will give away one copy of a book of a reader's choice. Her titles are Surrender the Wind (stand alone)
From the Daughters of the Potomac series, book 1 Before the Scarlet Dawn, book 2 Beside Two Rivers, book 3 Beyond the Valley.

C.J. Chase
C.J. will be giving away a copy of "The Reluctant Earl" to one commenter.
C.J.'s dad would have been 75.  He died when he was only 40.

THE RELUCTANT EARL
Caught in the Act

Alone in a gentleman's bedchamber, rummaging through his clothing-governess Leah Vance risks social ruin. Only by selling political information can she pay for her sister's care. And the letter she found in Julian DeChambrelle's coat could be valuable-if the ex-sea captain himself had not just walked in.

As a navy officer, Julian knew his purpose. As a new earl, he's plagued by trivialities and marriage-obsessed females. Miss Vance's independence is intriguing-and useful. In return for relaying false information, he will pay her handsomely. But trusting her, even caring for her? That would be pure folly. Yet when he sees the danger that surrounds her, it may be too late to stop himself...

BEYOND THE VALLEY
Book 3 in the Daughters of the Potomac series
When Sarah's husband Jamie drowns, her young life if shattered and takes a turn that she never expected. Pregnant and now widowed, she reaches out to Jamie's family for help but they are unwilling. Instead they devise a plan to have her kidnapped. She is deceived and taken aboard a ship headed for the Chesapeake to be sold as an indentured servant, bound to unspeakable hardship and forced into the same harsh world she left.

Caught in the talons of servitude, she falls in love with a young conscientious doctor, Alex Hutton, who has arrived in Virginia to care for his widowed sister in law and two young nieces. Called back to serve in Washington's army, he promises he will return for her, gain her freedom and wed her. Yet other plans were made for Sarah when her bankrupt owner sells her. Will she make her way back to Alex and freedom as he searches for her? Or will her hopes be crushed at the hands of the man who deceived her long ago in Cornwall when she faced destitution?

Beyond the Valley is a delightful escape of adventure and romance and a sweeping saga of tragedy and hope that you won’t want to miss! (5 Stars)
MaryLu Tyndall, author of the Surrender to Destiny Series

Review in RT Book Reviews Magazine - 4 stars
(Creating characters with intense realism and compassion is one of Gerlach's gifts. Her books typically involve dramatic situations, giving her characters a chance to rise above their adversity. Beyond the Valley is a shining example of that, reminding us that we are never forsaken. This is the third in the Daughters of the Potomac series. Sarah's character was introduced in the first novel, Before the Scarlet Dawn, and now she has her own heart-wrenching story that takes us from England to Virginia and Maryland. The historic setting is vividly descriptive, bringing the story to life, almost becoming a character unto itself. You may shed some tears, but you'll come away with deep contentment and satisfaction of a story well told.)

  2. I will happily take a break from my embroidery to accept your kind invitation to tea. I don't know how long I can stay at the tea as I am awaiting word of my uncle, Colonel John Kelly, who is expected to arrive at our home any time. He will be partcipating in the Constitutional Convention. Because you asked, I have recently taken a liking to Bohea tea, and raisin teacakes, so poplular here in Phildadelphia, will surely be my undoing.

  3. Lovely of you to drop in and savor a cup of Bohea with us, Lady Cynthia. Do take an extra raisin teacake home for your distinguished guest. It is the least we can offer such a noble patriot.

  4. Good rainy morning! I enjoy Plantation Mint tea with chocolate chip muffins. You cannot imagine such a delightful flavor as the two combine. My tea would taste extra delicious in that tea cup you're giving away.

I read The Reluctant Earl and can highly recommend that all must get a copy. Also, I hear Rita's books are desired by all who enjoy romance and history combined. With three of them in my library, I should be well set for a few days.

    2. Good day, Miss Kathleen. I must say that Julian is a more than sigh worthy hero. I had not read any of CJ's previous works but was delighted beyond measure by this charming and romantic story. It has a perfect amount of mystery to make it as delicious as my tea and muffins.

    3. Anne, thank you for the gracious compliment. It's still a bit surreal when people tell me they enjoyed my book--and I hope it stays that way so I don't take readers for granted but instead keep trying to find new ways to improve.

Kathleen, this man is actually more comfortable on a ship than a horse, but he's been on land long enough he's gotten, er, back in the saddle, so to speak.

  7. Good morn, ladies. I am so glad to join you all today. There are stormy skies and snow is expected in my town, historical Frederick, Maryland. My fair city dates back to 1745, and we have beautiful buildings and churches, Rose Hill Manor and Prospect Hall, and lots of history. We are a short carriage ride (provided it is a nice day and no rain) to the Potomac, the setting for my series, 'The Daughters of the Potomac'. As you see, the final book in the series has been released and is receiving rave reviews --- to God be the glory. I hope you have a chance to read it. Sarah is quite a lady in her own right, brave and kind.

    2. Good morning, fair lady. I hope my letter arrives in time for your tea party celebration. I so miss Mama and Papa as I sit here in the wilds of the Tennessee. The weather has been lovely, but I do so miss the society of feminine fellowship. I received your book Beyond the Valley and read two chapters before my light waned. It's a delicious story, and I cannot wait to find out how our dear Sarah survives the loss of her husband Jamie. Oh why didn't he listen to her warning! But men will be men. May the grace and peace of God be with you, dearest Rita. I will think of you as I pour a spot of tea and enjoy these coarse corn cakes sweetened with honey.

  27. So true about God giving us examples in nature to help us through our darkest hours. There was a time last summer when our family was going through a difficult moment, and Paul and I sat out in the backyard looking up at the stars all night and singing. It was so healing.

We live in some hard times. People in Colonial days faced hardships we could not imagine, but clung to their faith and each other to get through. That is why I write historical fiction the way I do. They are romances, yes, but they are inspirational dramas. You won't find a fluffy read.

Good morning to all! I do apologize for being a bit late. (that pesky time zone difference) I brought these flowers for our lovely hostesses, for all the hard work they have done putting together this tea party. I am afraid I cannot shake hands or give out hugs this day, for I am nursing a cold. I do not wish to spread my cold about.....(she lifts her hankie to her mouth and proceeds to cough a little bit)
I would simply love a hot cup of tea to soothe my sore throat. I am not much of a tea drinker, but I fear coffee will only irritate rather than soothe.
Now.....(she looks around)...where do I put these flowers? They are quite heavy and they seem to be blocking my view of this lovely room.
Oh, could I get some lemon in my tea? If it's not too trouble.

  44. If you check the post above the comments, I've added two recipes. My UK readers tell me these are essential for a ladies tea --- cream scones and Devon cream.

Did you know that on October 19, 1774, Annapolis, Maryland had their own Boston Tea Party?
The cargo vessel, 'The Peggy Stewart', was burned down to the waterline for bringing tea into the harbor against the boycott on tea imports imposed in retaliation for the siege on Boston. I write about it in my novel 'The Everlasting Mountains', which will be reissued this summer along with the prequel 'Thorns In Eden' in a 2-in-1 collection.

You will enjoy viewing warming photos and menu of their tea room. Tell Miss Marsha her cousin, Kathleen, has sent you! There is a fine article on their About page. I have enjoyed fine tea times there, and... my first sampling of clotted cream and jam with scones!

Thank you so much for inviting me to this fine party. I've traveled all the way from the Carolina's. I am not much for hot tea but since it is such a cold day today I just might be persuaded to partake of some.

I hear a huge congratulations is in order to Rita, C.J. and Kelly for all their hard work in getting their fine manuscripts published, this is such an accomplishment in this day and time.

I tea party on a snowy day is just the thing! I will be coming with a cup of my favorite, Peppermint, and maybe later I will switch to my 2nd favorite, Spearmint.
I don't have a favorite Colonial treat that I know of, but as a child (and I still do) like to make Pomander Balls with oranges. I read about them in my American Girl Felicity books when I was about 10, the recipe was easy and so much fun! Who knew a doll/books would get me started in a love for all things Colonial, and who can beat those gorgeous dresses?

Thanks for sharing the Kindle book link, Rita! I have your first book in print and have been anxious to read it :)

So if you aren’t sure whether to invest your good coin and precious time into such a novel, you may want to sample the story. But beware, ladies. You will want to read on as you come to care about what becomes of poor Sarah Carr. The question is, will she be rescued from a life of servitude and find love at last?

    1. Good day to you Miss C.J.! Delighted to make your acquaintance. Dear C.J., my mother died when she was 41, a month before I was six. So miss her and the influence she would have had on my life. I did receive a wonderful memory. At age seventeen, I visited a schoolmate. As we were in their entry, I was laughing; an elderly grandmother in the next room said, "Sally is here."
      "No, Mother. Remember Sally died."
      "I hear her laughing."
I thank our Lord for this gift received 11 years later from a beloved memory of one so dear.

Here's a cute story for you. My dad had one sister, 8 years younger than he. When Nancy was in first grade, the teacher asked (on February 22) if anyone knew whose birthday it was. Nancy raised her hand and proudly told the teacher it was her big brother's birthday. Not the answer the teacher was looking for, but it was true.

Interesting tidbit ~*~ "Washington took the oath of office in New York City, and he and Martha lived and worked there until they moved with the government to the nation’s second temporary capital, Philadelphia. Though Washington helped determine the site of the White House, construction was not completed during his presidency and the Washingtons never lived there. Following Washington’s second term as president, the couple returned permanently to their estate in Virginia located about 16 miles south of Washington, D.C."

  69. Hi, Jasmine. I always loved history, so writing in an historical time period was a no-brainer for me. I've written a couple contemporary settings, and while they are fun, I don't think they fit my "voice" as well. And I love mysteries (all the way back to my Trixie Belden days), so I wanted to combine the two. I've written in a number of different time periods and settings, and it was really just a matter of which one fell on the right editors desk.

Turned out the one that got my first sale involved a War of 1812 plot and was set in London. And that meant my next few books have British settings since editors like an author to stay in one setting for a while. Someday, I'll come back to my early colonials and Civil War and Reconstruction Virginia and Victorian Pennsylvania and ... well, you get the idea!

Constant Comment is always a favorite. Taylors Christmas Tea is a good bold tea with a very slight spice hint, and Lady (Earl) Grey are my most favorite.

I little teapot has been especially busy this year as I have had the good fortune to have one of those new inventions called a microwave. Did Mr. Washington have one of those? Well, ladies, I don't even have to boil my water! I just put 2 teabags (are they not so cute) and the teapot of water in the microwave for 5 minutes, let steep an additional few minutes, sweeten it with that wonderful white grated sugar and I have such a wonderful spot of tea at the ready.

Why, did you know that after I pout mine in my little "heart cup" I just put the whole teapot back in the little microwave box and it stays warm for ever-s0-long. Did you ever hear of such a thing?

I'll have to decline the shortbread today, ladies, my unmentionables simply are not letting me breath!

  84. Sorry to be late to the party, but I had an unexpectedly busy day yesterday and time just slipped away from me. My congratulations and the very best of wishes to such three talented authors! Each novel sounds like a wonderful historical, and their covers are beautiful. I would love to try a cup of that Dutch tea if there is any left. Blessings to all!

Hello again! So, what have I missed? So sorry I had to leave early yesterday, but my cold has really done a number on me. Today, I am battling a bad headache, but I am still here....if not for just a short while.
Carrie! So lovely to see you! I saw you wondering about yesterday, but alas I never had the opportunity to say hello....so Hello! I do believe I will be having coffee today, my dear. The tea was lovely yesterday, but I am not much of a tea drinker.
Isn't it wonderful about the new releases? And they all sound so great! I have a lot of books to read, but there is always room for more. What is a home without books? I'll tell you what it is, it's boring and uneducated.
Well, I think I will be getting that coffee now, I do believe I need a little caffeine kick. I will catch up with you later.
(Chaplain Debbie walks away, holding her head, because it is pounding BIG time) :)
