BESIDE TWO RIVERS
Book 2 in the ‘Daughters of the Potomac Series’ published by
Abingdon Press, October 2012.
From the banks of the Potomac to the misty moors of England comes a
tale of love won and love lost, and the faith to find it again.
Vaguely can Darcy Morgan recall the day her father returned
home from fighting in the American Revolution.
When he discovers his unfaithful wife had borne a child in his absence,
the marriage is broken, and Darcy’s quiet childhood along the two rivers was
changed forever.
She grows up believing her mother is dead and that her father journeyed west to the lands beyond the Blue Ridge. Her indulging Uncle Will, excitable Aunt Mari, and her five female cousins, cannot shield her from thinking of the mother she loved and the father she barely knew, nor can she escape the fleeting images in her memory of the babe Ilene and Ilene’s surrogate mother, Sarah, or the grandmotherly servant, Fiona Goodall.

In this dramatic saga that began with 'Before the Scarlet
Dawn', Darcy seeks to unravel a lifetime of memories unaware that the young
Englishman who loves her holds the answers. Her search takes her far from her
beloved home along the Potomac, to a manor house in faraway England. Soon the secrets of the
past slowly rise to the surface.
Will she be reunited with the most important people in her life? Will Hayward and Eliza find peace and reconciliation? Will Darcy's faith sustain her to make the difficult choices, and will the love she and Ethan share endure?
Rita's next book in the series is "Beyond the Valley" all three books published by Abingdon Press.

Please feel welcome to enjoy a cup of tea brewed to your liking, hot apple cider or coffee and fresh blueberry scones, chocolate cake, lemon squares and other lovely desserts offered up by many of our guests. Thanks to you all!
Enjoy our repast as we dine al fresco with our lovely hostess, Mistress Rita, overlooking the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers near the historic Hilltop Inn of West Virginia.

From Rita: These books are not your typical formula romances. You will find romance, but you will
also find stories about relationships between people. The stories are
about forgiveness, redemption, loyalty, and the power of love. Each
character has good points, but they are also flawed human beings that
make mistakes and fall hard, and at some point struggle through the
adversity, dust themselves off and move on. So the sugary sweet romances
they are not. My agent called my writing 'romances with more meat on the bones'.

The Harper's Ferry area is charming, and has such a rich history and beautiful views. I just received Beside Two Rivers from Amazon.I'm looking forward to reading Before The Scarlet Dawn first. You look stunning, Rita, in the pink gown.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Janet. I love pink...and I love how that photo-shopped dress gives me a waistline I haven't had since my twenties! Thanks for purchasing copies of my books.
ReplyDeleteRita you are beautiful in pink!!! I have to be honest, I have not read any of your books. I am an avid amish fiction reader, but I am looking forward to reading your books too. Thanks to Facebook for helping me reach out to new authors that I have not heard of.
ReplyDeleteThanks
Jody

Time to start, Jody! Would you like English breakfast tea or our American variety--sent in from Charleston?
DeleteEnglish Breakfast Tea Please :)
Delete\
It is pretty strong, Jody, but it goes well with any of the pastries we have or biscuits!
DeleteI love pink, Rita, and you look great in it! I am wearing pink, too, to this party right now but plan to change (it is my robe, shhh, don't tell anyone.) Let me get dressed and bring some tea around for our guests. I understand our sweet Pat will be by later as hostess.
ReplyDeleteWe're all girls here, so I'll admit, I'm still in my pjs, Carrie...pink as well. Time to shower and change for the tea party. Be back in a 'mo'.
ReplyDeletePlease don't enter me as I have read all of Rita's awesome books so far! I just wanted to come over and congratulate Rita on the release of her new book!
ReplyDeleteAnd to tell JODY above you just HAVE to read Rita's books. lol You are sooo missing out, and I quite agree with you-Rita looks very pretty in pink! Sounds lke a great title for a movie. ;)
As TERESA MATHEWS can tell you-I love lemon squares, so I will have one of those with some peppermint tea, please. Thank you.
Oh my! I had a paragraph posted on here and now it isn't showing. :( Please don't enter me as I have read all of Rita's awesome books! JODY above, you must read at least one--you'll be hooked! lol Congrats, Rita, on the release of your new book; you are such a great talent.
ReplyDeleteTERESA MATHEWS can tell you you how much I love lemon squares (she makes the best ones in the world, so if you run out please let her know:)), so I will take a lemon square and a cup of peppermint tea, thank you. And Rita, you look so "pretty in pink!" That would make a great title for a movie don't you think? ;)
Thank you Diana!!!! I plan too read them asap!!!!!!
DeleteI think Pat is bringing the lemon squares, DIANA! Lots of peppermint tea, though--some coming right up!
DeleteI have always wondered what I would look like with long blonde hair. Now I know.
ReplyDeleteLooks cute but I love your gorgeous dark hair, Rita!
DeleteYou are a new author for me. I have not read the first book in this series. Is second book continuing the first to read it out of order? Thanks. Sounds like it might be with the early childhood. I just check our community library site and they do not have your books. I need to be signed up for this drawing it appears!! Thanks, Kathleen
ReplyDeletelanehillhouse[at]centurylink[dot]net
KATHLEEN!! Do you want some peppermint tea like Diana or English breakfast tea like Jody?
DeleteHello, Lane.
DeleteThe first book in the series is the story of Darcy's mother, Eliza. Eliza is the main character. Beside Two Rivers is indeed the sequel, and wraps up a lot of things from the first book. You could ask your librarian to acquire these books if you don't win in the drawing.
Thank you for stopping in and commenting. At present I have four books out and one on the way in February, another in late spring.
Stop by my website for more. http://ritagerlach.blogspot.com/
Which book do you think I should start with first????
ReplyDeleteJody, it probably depends upon whether you want to launch into this series. I loved her book "The Rebel's Pledge" and since it is inexpensive as an ebook I'd start with that. Great story! Thanks for asking!
DeleteTea? Biscuits?
Hi Jody,
DeleteIn the series begin with book 1, the prequel 'Before the Scarlet Dawn', followed by 'Beside Two Rivers' the sequel. 'Beyond the Valley' is the last book and comes out in February. It is Sarah's story, a character from book 1.
I also have two other historical romances:
Surrender the Wind
The Rebel's Pledge
You can read about my books on my website under 'Bookshelf'. http://ritagerlach.blogspot.com/
I have not read any of Rita's books, but I have heard wonderful things about them. I would love to be entered to win a copy of one of her books! emmamalissa(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Isn't that cover of Beside Two Rivers gorgeous?!
DeleteThank you, Emma.
DeleteI am coming around with gluten-free crepes rolled up with pumpkin butter or lemon curd inside. Also have hot tea with sugar cubes or honey to sweeten.
ReplyDeleteI'll have peanut butter blossoms from my end. Yesterday the preacher included a comment about those (what I always make him) in his sermon, I get home and on tv the very commercial of those came on...took it as a sign! The one day I couldn't go to the dump church in Reyosa, MX and I get cookies preached at me!
ReplyDeleteLOL Melody--enjoy those cookies! That is so funny. What is the dump church? Is that one of your missions?
DeleteWe have a church in the old dump of Reynosa, MX that meets every Sun. Our friends & us go to church on stateside, jump in our donated donut van & head to MX for services then on to Progreso, MX for a night service. We've been there for 5 years. We have 49 kids now besides all the adults. Most everyone has dirt floors, cook on firewood outside, some with pallets for houses, drunks that aren't drunk anymore but get mad at the new drunks & how they act! It's an awesome experience!

Ladies,
ReplyDeleteI have included an update to the post. A lot of readers ask writers how they come up with their ideas, especially for a series. You may enjoy reading how this came about for me.
Read 'Evolution of a Novel Series', the story of how the Daughters of the Potomac Series came about. http://ritagerlach.blogspot.com/p/evolution-of-novel-series.html
would love to win. sounds great. thanks
ReplyDeleteWould you like some tea and some of these yummy treats, PAT?
DeleteBy jigeroo I didn't follow directions! I'm eating cookies while reading your site!
ReplyDeletemissionwife@hotmail.com
Sounds like a good plan to me! Melody, I can't even eat the sweets today because I am on day four of some kind of upset tummy deal. I think it is from my meds.
DeleteBetween Two Rivers kept me thinking throughout the whole book....'how could he think that when he....' and 'she didn't....' and 'you've gotta be kidding....!' HAVE to read this next book but then I suppose you'll leave me hanging again, huh Rita?
ReplyDeletemissionwife@hotmail.com
I LOVE that your romances aren't sugar-coated. Really, I think true romance/love is not! Would love to win one of these books--the covers are just SMASHING (in true British form, there). My email is heatherdaygilbert@gmail.com.
ReplyDeleteAll the best to you, Rita!
Great to see you HEATHER and I will add that you are "MA"!!! I bet you want some English breakfast tea then. Coming right up!
DeleteMe too, Heather. And I'm glad you like the covers.
DeleteWish I could have crepes, Carrie. Diet prevents me. So I'm having a peach Greek yogurt instead. I have to run some errands with hubby, but will be back. He's leaving on Wednesday for a four-day fly fishing trip to the Salmon River in NY.
ReplyDeleteJust finished The Rebel's Pledge and loved it. After I finish Before the Scarlet Dawn I'd love to read Beside Two Rivers so sign me up!
ReplyDeletetojoleen-at-gmail-dot-com
BTW: I'm not sure how I attained a book by Sharon Gerlach, but there it is. Any relation?
I'm so glad to know you enjoyed The Rebel's Pledge. It was my first full-length novel. Originally I wrote it by hand. I still have the binder it is in.
DeleteI'm not related to Sharon Gerlach. I looked her up and we at opposite ends of the country. I can tell you, I am related to a world famous romance author. She is called the Queen of Romance. Carrie, graciously referred to me as 'the Queen of Scene' the other day...of which I felt so honored to receive such a compliment.
Hello Ladies!--
ReplyDeleteYes....I believe I will have one of those treats! Thank you so much Carrie! I am come to enjoy the lovely repast near the woodsy area chosen by Rita for the setting of her series. So glad we have a fair day for our dining out-of-doors, or as Lord Chesterfield once put it, a picnic!
I am looking forward to reading Beyond Two Rivers...will be purchasing it at my Alpha & Omega store that carries your books, Rita, but add me to the giveaway--just in case ;)
Hope your hubby will enjoy his time in N.Y.--We're getting chilly weather here though.
Hugs, Rita--and blessings on your further writing endeavors....
A good day to all of you lovely people! It is such a beautiful day for a tea party. Thank you ever so much for inviting me and my hubby, Jack. We are simply delighted to be here. What is that wonderful aroma wafting this way? Jack, you must fetch me some of whatever that is....go on with you now, I'll be right here waiting.
ReplyDeleteRita, it is so nice to meet you, I am Chaplain Debbie. I must admit that I have not read any of your writings. I recently acquired your writing 'Before the Scarlet Dawn', but I've yet to read it. I am sure I will enjoy it immensely. I would love to own the second book in the series, so please do enter me in the drawing. If it's not one of the choices, I am sure I will enjoy any others that you have written.
I'd like to introduce my husband to you...now where is he? Oh, there you are....Jack, this is Rita, our lovely hostess. Rita, this is Jack, my husband. He is a sailor, but he is home for a few weeks right now. Well, I am sure you have others to greet, so I will let you go. Come Jack, let's mingle......
debsbunch5@jesusanswers.com
I am pleased to meet you, Chaplain Debbie and husband Jack. Thank you so much for coming to our party. It's a little brisk and overcast along the Potomac, but beautiful just the same with the trees turning color.
DeleteHi DEBBIE!!! So glad to see you came by with Jack and that he got home for a visit! I always love visiting with you here at CQ, too!!
DeleteAny lemon-ginger tea today?
ReplyDeleteOh, that sounds so good right now!
DeleteIf either of you need a refill, I'd be glad to do so. And let me see what Mrs. Iacuzzi left for us for a snack tonight.
DeleteAnd I DO know that ROBIN is a MA member, like Rita and me! Hmmm, must go see who might be getting a little mailer from their zone director soon!!!
DeleteRita, I am so happy for you. I loved the first book and looking forward to the second.
ReplyDeleteYou are so kind, Mary. Thank you.
DeleteAnd MARY, I know you are MA even though you didn't put it on there! Gingerbread with cream sauce for dessert?
DeleteChaplain Debbie, Robin and Mary--
ReplyDeleteWelcome! So good to see you here today! Robin--you've driven right into the past...! And of course, Swabbie Jack...I'm sure he will appreciate the treats too.
If you are interested in a giveaway--please don't forget to leave your e-mail! And a reminder to become a CQ Follower if you're so inclined. Thanks, and blessings, Ladies!
Good day, Pat, it is so nice seeing you as well, isn't it lovely to see Pat, Jack? (Jack tips his hat and bows)
DeleteIt is a good thing I brought my wrap with me, it is a bit chilly here. But, if I get too cold, I have my husband to keep me warm. (smiles at Jack; Jack smiles back)
*Jack: If you will excuse me, ladies, I must partake of something to drink. May I get you anything?
Yes, I would love some lemonade, if you please. Would you care for anything, Pat?
While Jack gets some drinks, I think I will stroll over and admire the beautiful trees. I do love this time of year!
I hope Jack tried some of the hot spiced cider. It goes great with the gingerbread that I brought out. It is a tad chilly but the leaves are beginning to change and that warms the heart!
DeleteI have heard so much about this author. Unfortunately, I have not had the chance to read any of her works. It sounds good though.
ReplyDeleteks4readin@yahoo.com
Sounds like a great book! Congrats, Rita!
ReplyDeleteAnother MA (secondary, but it counts!) visitor today. Good to see you Jennifer! If you have room for desert there are chocolate tarts coming out and lovely fresh gingerbread tonight.
DeleteOh, so happy to see Rita and a tea party in progress! I must say this cover is one of my favorites of the year!! Readers are in for such a treat as the writing is every bit as delicious as the look of the book:)
ReplyDeleteI wish I could tarry but duty calls. Sigh. Huge congrats on another great book, Rita, and for the uplifting party here. Bless you all!
Thank you, Laura. I am honored.
DeleteWell, Jack and I have had a marvelous time, Rita. Before we venture home, we will probably take a nice stroll. This weather and view is just too good to pass up. We thank you again for the wonderful invite. We must do this again! Have a pleasant evening and do give my best to one and all! I will leave you with my email once again:
ReplyDeletedebsbunch5@jesusanswers.com
Chaplain Debbie and Jack, so glad you came by!
DeleteOh, I wish I had been here, instead of at doctor appointments, so that Governor Harry Light Horse Lee and I could have chatted with you, DEBBIE!!!
DeleteHello Rita. Good to meet you and I love seeing the river and the changing colors of the trees. Beautiful. And, been ages since I've been to a Tea party. Believe I'll take some tea with Honey. All of the books great, and I'd love to win one. Another new author for me. Thanks for the invite. Please put my name in the pit. Maxie ( mac262@me.com )
ReplyDeleteWe certainly will, Anon. So glad you stopped by. Such a fun day.
DeleteMAXIE!! Great to see you here! Would you like a refill on your hot tea with honey? Care for gingerbread?
DeleteSorry for the mistakes. Forgot to edit before sending. All of the books look great, and,,put my name in the pot. Maxie
ReplyDeletePit was fine too. It's deeper than a pot and maybe that means we have to fill it with a lot more names. But then if we put names in a pot, you have a better chance of winning!
DeleteWhat a wonderful day for a party! I'm thrilled for you Mistress Rita and am happy to celebrate the launch of your book with a taste of those delicious confections and tea, always tea.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Carla, for your kind words, and for being such an instrumental part of Colonial Quills!
DeleteOh, a gentleman hasn't bowed and tipped his hat to me in ever so long! So glad you both could make it, Deb; enjoy your tour of the area and journey home.
ReplyDeleteMaxie and 4readin --Welcome! You will thoroughly enjoy Rita's books; I have Surrender the Wind and Scarlet Dawn--next up: Beside Two Rivers. (I also need to complete the group with Rebel's Pledge :)
Jennifer and Laura--it's wonderful to see you here! Thanks for stopping in to CQ-- I know you have very busy writing schedules ladies. Our best to you as well!
Pat,
DeleteYou will love The Rebel's Pledge. Ladies have told me they have enjoyed the hero as the main character...and a chivalrous man Matthew Hale is, too.
I had never had a man tip his hat to me until in late August my husband Paul and I visited Fort Frederick in western Maryland. A British officer was walking out of the gates, saw me , and tipped his hat. It made me feel like a lady.
It's been a very busy day here, but I simply had to drop by for a moment to congratulate you, Rita, on your new release and to compliment you on your stunning pink gown! I must say you look as lovely as your book covers! I can only stay a minute, but I'll have a cup of that delicious tea, Carrie, and I believe I will indulge in the crepes with lemon curd. As usual we have a delightful gathering, and what a wonderful setting this is for it!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Joan. I am so honored. You are one of my favorite authors. I wish the pink gown was the real thing and that I could easily pour into it's size. Pat worked a miracle with photoshop.
DeleteI hope you got your tea and crepes, Joan and that you enjoyed them! These parties are so fun!
DeleteHello! PLEASE enter me!!! I have Before the Scarlet Dawn (book 1, Daughters of the Potomac) and I would LOVE to win Beside Two Rivers (book 2, Daughters of the Potomac) to complete the series so far :)

ReplyDeleteABreading4fun [at] gmail [dot] com
Our pleasure. Really. We love these parties!
DeleteWell, it appears I'm terribly late for the party as usual!! I do hope you can forgive me!! I fear I've traveled a long way and could use a piece of chocolate cake to strengthen me again. :-)
ReplyDeleteHowever, let me add my praise to Rita's books! I've read every single one of them and adored them all. She's right in that they aren't your typical sweet romance.. they are more like historic epics that really move you... stories and characters you'll think about long after you turn the final page.
Well, I'm off to find that cake!!!
Governor Harry Light Horse Lee is here with me and recalls with great delight how enchanted he was to meet you in Charleston at your soiree, MaryLu. He is also terribly late and requests chocolate cake also, so I shall fetch it forth for both of you! Governor Lee requests fruit punch and I imagine you might enjoy that, too. Governor Lee comments that the setting is "lovely."
DeleteOh.. please tell the Governor that the pleasure was all mine! And I can't thank you enough for bringing me some cake and punch. What a wonderful hostess.. and yes, indeed, the setting is exquisitely refreshing. I believe I'll sit and stay awhile.
DeleteHe has been working on homework...um, er, his paperwork. He SO loves these events and was so disappointed he'd missed day one, yesterday. It is a lovely setting that Rita selected. The governor approved. I believe he traveled through this area when he served during the American Revolution.
DeleteCongratulations, Rita! I need to check this one out; it sounds wonderful. :) Love that area, too - it holds many fond vacation memories for my family and me.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much to CQ for sharing this today!
Blessings,
Karen
