The Bicentennial Almanac

The Bicentennial Almanac
Edited by Calvin D. Linton
Ph.D.

The back cover statement of this book begins with: “You are holding a cherished book—a panorama of American life celebrating the 200th birthday of America. Relive year-by-year, and month-by-month the important, the unusual, and the everyday events that shaped our nation’s first two hundred years. Many books highlight the outstanding or critical years in American life … The Bicentennial Almanac is filled not only with the events of major years, but with the little known, almost forgotten fragments, that form a 200-year diary of America.” (italics are mine).
This is a description of a wonderful book published by Thomas Nelson in 1976 for our country’s Bicentennial celebration. As a writer, I enjoy gleaning those bits of information about unusual or nearly forgotten experiences or people that can provide ideas for an original story line or theme.
Like a diary, the Bicentennial Almanac notes real people that influenced this country for good or bad, the natural disasters that befell us, the dangers of westward expansion, and behind-the-scenes political and financial maneuverings that dragged America into major wars.
This book is well-illustrated with the earliest photos and paintings of people and events; including a photo of the actual headlines and front page copy about the sinking of the Titanic in the Chicago Daily Tribune. Or see photos from the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. On a lighter note, I’d never known that Meriwether Lewis (of the Lewis & Clark Expedition) had actually acted as mid-wife for Sacagawea, their Native American guide.
Obtaining a copy: I purchased this book a few years back at a library book sale (a great place to hang out). It's available on Amazon, Google books and eBay, or check out your local libraries. My county library system still has two of them to loan, but since they’re older copies, they may not remain on the shelves for many more years. My rating: 4.5 stars (information good, but I caught a couple of printing errors).

Tale of Redemption and Forgiveness!

Kelly Long sweeps us away to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in the year 1777; to a tumultuous time in the history of our country, where the Redcoats, loyalists, patriots, and Amish pacifists coexist. It is also a time of great political unrest, and persecution towards the Amish sect, who, in spite of their peace loving dictates, find their hearts rebelling against the injustices perpetrated in the colonies.

In spite of the political uncertainty surrounding her, Lena Yoder, a beautiful young Amish woman, can barely contain her joy. She is in the throes of love with the handsome Adam Wyse, and her mother is expecting another child. Unbeknownst to Lena, however, in just a short time a promise that her dying mother exacts from her beloved Adam, turns her world upside down, and she finds herself forced to turn to another for support, Adam's brother, Isaac.

Adam Wyse carries a dark secret of guilt and shame from being physically abused, and ponders joining the Patriot's cause to try to escape his problems, the worst of which is being unable to bear seeing his beloved Lena with Isaac. Can Adam ever overcome his demons?...and why does his father seem to delight in tormenting him so? Will Adam run off to war, and keep his promise to Lena's mother concerning her?...and is it too late for forgiveness and redemption between a father and son, and a lifetime of abuse?
This was the first book I have ever read by Kelly Long, but it won't be my last! She touches on some very heavy issues in this book; PTSD, child abuse, the controversial habit of unmarried Amish young people "bundling", to name a few.

Kelly's characters are realistic and not flawless as in some of the Amish books of today, and I loved the inclusion of an older couple's romance, which lended a tender, heartwarming touch to this novel. This is truly a heartrending story of love, redemption, and forgiveness, with a very satisfying conclusion filled with twists and turns. Nicely written, Kelly Long!

Interview with Kelly Long - Author of New Colonial Amish series

Last year, when our new member to Colonial American Christian Writers, Kelly Long, told me she was writing an Amish Colonial series, I was thrilled!  I was the only one in the group writing about characters who had emigrated from that part of Europe. Plus with the interest in the Amish, I really hoped and prayed that when this book came out we’d also have an increased interest in colonial American books.  I have had the pleasure of listening to five of Kelly’s eight books/novellas. She is an amazing author.

I am looking forward to reading Arms of Love (Publisher -  Thomas Nelson, 2012) when it becomes available for purchase on April 3rd.

Kelly, what got you interested in the colonial time period?
It was truly because I felt there was a missing piece in our cultural perceptions of the Amish—their past. I wanted to look at their flight from Europe to their beginnings in Lancaster County, America. At the turn of the eighteenth century, there were only 500-1200 Amish in America.

What inspired your latest colonial work?
This latest work, Arms of Love, was inspired by a desire to explore Amish beginnings as well as to pay tribute to those who suffer from PTSD, a disorder which has ravaged two of my loved ones. And, I wanted the chance to do a Novel Bible Study…a four week study at the back of the book which uses the novel as a launching off point to discuss Biblical application in everyday lives.

Do you have a favorite colonial place you like to visit and why?
Two of my children were born in New Hampshire…I’d like to go back there for a bit for the memories.

Kelly, do you have a favorite colonial recipe you enjoy?
I can share an Amish recipe… Readers, you can find a Whoopie pie cookie recipe from Kelly this coming Saturday on CQ!
