But true, it didn't take long for such practices to really strip the soil. All this became an issue in one of my novels, set on a tobacco farm in the Piedmont. I sure learned a lot researching that book.Lori Bentonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04714197239425827339noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3139112422565969072.post-23953919734556026362011-12-25T20:09:03.950-05:002011-12-25T20:09:03.950-05:00LORI, the guide through the National Park service ...LORI, the guide through the National Park service said that at the time of the American Revolution our fields around Yorktown were pretty bare because tobacco farmers had leached out the soil so badly that the land had to lay fallow.Carrie Fancett Pagelshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09096954464239963966noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3139112422565969072.post-57029744552774819002011-12-25T19:46:00.994-05:002011-12-25T19:46:00.994-05:00MARYLU, sorry, I failed to put the link up, but it...MARYLU, sorry, I failed to put the link up, but it is there now - Yorktown Victory Center http://www.historyisfun.org/Yorktown-Victory-Center.htm I agree, the idea of eating something sealed with a pig's bladder was pretty disgusting, but it was really neat to watch them do the process.Carrie Fancett Pagelshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09096954464239963966noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3139112422565969072.post-37548143061765715062011-12-25T19:38:22.763-05:002011-12-25T19:38:22.763-05:00ELAINE, I used the turkeys for worm eating in my n...ELAINE, I used the turkeys for worm eating in my new MS and I had never heard that before. My mom has memories of picking tobacco worms off her uncle's tobacco plants in Virginia, and making her own stick of leaves to hang in the barn. Tobacco farming was my family heritage from the early 1700s (or maybe late 1600s) up until my grandfather, who became a carpenter instead.Lori Bentonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04714197239425827339noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3139112422565969072.post-91894201225406976562011-12-24T16:23:01.790-05:002011-12-24T16:23:01.790-05:00Great pictures, Carrie!!
