I was hooked.
The cast of characters was broad, the storylines engaging, and the twists and turns left my eyebrows raised throughout the first season.
I watched the Second Season when my neck went out and I was off my feet for several days. Since I was so close to being caught up, I rented the third season and watched that in between daily life.
I became so invested, I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I won't give away any spoilers for those who haven't seen the show, but I was shocked, heartbroken, and almost angry with several storylines. But, I faithfully watched Season Four when it originally aired, wanting to know what would happen next. For me, the plotlines began to drag a bit. I wondered if part of the problem was that I had to wait a week between each episode. Up until then, I had watched several shows in a row on DVD and could stay engaged. Thinking that was the case, I stayed tuned.
Season Five, I must admit, left me feeling a bit upset with Lady Mary and bored with several other storylines. I set my DVR for each episode, but found myself not interested to watch them. Half way through the season, I stopped all together, and surprisingly didn't feel I missed anything.
When Season Six arrived, I thought I'd give the first episode a try (especially because it was the last season). I realized I missed quite a bit from the end of Season Five, but I quickly caught up, and found myself hooked once again. I was reengaged with the characters and storylines, and I truly wanted to see a happily-ever-after for everyone. I was not disappointed--and I could not wait each week for the next episode.
Three years ago, when I was so hooked on the show, I couldn't imagine saying goodbye to the characters. But now, after going through so many ups and downs with them, and feeling a plethora of emotions, I'm ready to see the show end. Overall, it was an amazing story, and I'm happy I invested my time and emotions, but watching all the storylines tie together last night, I wasn't sad. I was very happy and felt satisfied.

ReplyDeleteHi, Carrie! Yes, I also admire Julian Fellows. He artfully wove together several storylines and he did it in a way that was engaging and believable. He definitely brought the different eras to life.
DeleteHi Gabrielle, I missed the first couple seasons of Downton Abby but have watched it off and on since. I hope to get the DVD's soon and watch from the first season.

DeleteI was also a late-comer to Downton Abbey. I didn't start watching until season 5. I'm not a TV watcher in general, so it took a LOT of people telling me that I HAD to watch this before it took. And I'm glad I did. It was a well-written and well-produced show.

Delete"Auld Lang Syne" at the finale was very touching. I liked the downstairs staff most. Kathleen ~ Lane Hill House
ReplyDeleteI loved that scene, as well. It was so sad that many of the beloved downstairs characters were no longer standing there, but I felt their presence.
DeleteI heard a lot about it from my British friends before it came out, so I was ready at the start. I adored this show, even when I was annoyed with it (the Patrick episode) but it held a bit piece of my heart and I loved the finale. Masterpiece is the only show I watch live, so it meant a lot to me. Each character had their moments. My favorite is Mrs. Hughes.
