Political/military - George Washington...actually, he wins only because he was both political and military, but close contenders are Thomas Jefferson and the Marquis de La Fayette.
Preacher - currently, John Leland (can't you tell from my Sunday posts?) :) He preached through the War of Independence, despite facing many dangers.
notorious/notable - Captain John Copythorn (sailed along the American coast, to the West Indies and Europe from 1750-1774) a distant ancestor whose ship carried various merchandise and slaves. In December 1757, Captain Copythorn's ship was the only one George Washington found available to carry his crop to Bristol. Apparently it was a treacherous journey and the captain did not arrive in Bristol until August 1758. Some believe he continued to sail various ships right through the War of Independence. Rumor has it, he ran supplies for George Washington, but you know how family stories go. :)
heroine - Mrs. Sally Leland, Elder John Leland's wife (married Sept 30, 1776). She more-or-less tackled a captain bent on killing her husband and held the captain in place until some men were able to take away his sword.

ReplyDeleteAs for favorite Colonials, hmmm. I did like reading that sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. Wasn't that Edwards, or something like that? That's some fire and brimstone right there.
And of course, I love everything about George Washington. I visited his home a few years ago. For some reason I can't think of what it's called. But it was lovely. I watched Colonial House on PBS several years ago and was shocked at how difficult life must have been for them. To be honest, I don't know much about Colonial times, but I would love to read a novel set in that time period, maybe something about an overseer's daughter. That would be a great novel, I'm sure. And if Carrie Pagels wrote it, it would be even better!!! ;-)

Regarding the questions --
My favorite military figure --
Being a South Carolinian, and for many other reasons, I deeply admire Brig. General Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, who stung like a wasp and irritated the British like a burr underneath their saddles. His efforts kept the two largest factions of the British army from joining together, which would have meant General Washington’s defeat.
A notorious colonial –
Again, as a South Carolinian I cannot help but hiss when I say the name Lt. Colonel Banastre Tarleton, the Butcher of the Waxhaws.
My favorite colonial period preacher --
One of the most notable chaplains during the Revolutionary War was Chaplain James Caldwell, a Presbyterian immortalized in Bret Harte’s poem, The Rebel High Priest. Caldwell’s wife was shot and killed by Hessians, and his church was burned by Tories. At the battle of Springfield, NJ, on June 23, 1780, when the Patriots stopped firing because they had run out of paper for wadding, Caldwell ran into a local Presbyterian church and brought out Watts Hymnals, and, according to the poem, he yelled, “Put Watts into ’em,—Boys, give ’em Watts!”
My favorite colonial heroine –
Elizabeth Jackson, mother of President Andrew Jackson, who in the midst of a terrible war and in the spirit of love and sacrifice, travelled far from her home in Waxhaw, SC, to the British prison ships in Charles Town Harbor to nurse her two cousins and other prisoners who were smallpox victims. While caring for Patriot prisoners, she became ill and died, laying down her life for others.

Let's see, there's Paul Revere, Betsy Ross, Scarlett O'Hara..whoops, wrong war....George Washington....and because he is the founder of my Methodism..John Wesley. Many heros come from the Colonial days and I'm grateful for all the creative writers who concentrate on this era to instruct and entertain us readers who demand the best. So - I also hand it to my favorite researcher and diviner of this time period - Carrie Fancett Pagels. I pray many happy and prosperous days in your coming year.
Having said all that...I'd love to win the quill open stylus. Oh, does the ink and well come with it?

Oh, and my favorite colonial figure is Alexander Hamilton. I am fascinated with his life, rising up from his humble beginnings to establish the treasury and the coast guard and even the tragic way he died in a duel makes his life story read like a novel.

DeleteOh, I love Alexander Hamilton, too, and have kept wondering about writing about him because I have a heroine inspired by his wife--but I married her off to one of my ancestors, lol, in the story. It is the third MS proposed in the first three book sub we sent out.
