I'm most honoroed to join you today at the Golden Plough! I am Elizabeth Howard, and my dear friend Isobel Vander Groot recently wrote me that with her family and fiance she had a lovely luncheon there recently on their way to Lancaster when they fled Philadelphia. General Howe was poised to take the city, and you can imagine that all was in the greatest distress and confusion.
ReplyDeleteOf course, the Vander Groots pressed Aunt Tess and me to join them at dear Mr. Lamb's estate, but we have other obligations until it becomes too dangerous to stay. And then my journey will take Caleb and me north of Albany, New York, to Jonathan, and I am most eager to see him again! The separations we have endured throughout this war have tried us most painfully.
Please do pass me a cup of tea, and I'll have a slice of that delightful Providence Cake. How is everyone doing today? Quite well, I hope!

ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful to be here, especially so because we're celebrating Joan's release. I read a lot of books but this series of hers takes precedence on my keeper shelf. Her covers are SO beautiful - even moreso in person - very vibrant and glossy and fitting for her high-action stories. And I mustn't forget to mention the ROMANCE:) She has a way of writing about things of the heart that tugs at your heart and makes you turn those pages faster and faster. I could go on and on - and I haven't even started on her stellar research!!

How stirringly he plays, putting me in mind of the Scottish Highlands, which I long to visit as Jonathan hails from there as well. It's so good to meet you, Chaplain Debbie! You remind me that I also need to read Mrs. Huntley-Talvis's story. I greatly sympathize with having a husband away for long periods of time and the happy reunions on their homecomings. Jonathan and I are also often separated for months at a time, and those periods are fraught with both longing and fear. How dear it is to see our loved ones return! Although we are forbidden to marry for the time being, I hope and pray that one day that joy shall be ours as well.

He and my father have endured much criticism over the war, and I and my sisters have had a hard time finding suitors because of it. But all of that is in the past, and John--dear John, he saved me. One day you and Eden will have to come and visit us in Ireland. I'll plan a tour of Westport for us, and we'll watch plays in the new theatre.

My dear friend Margaret Gage, with whom I'm sure you are acquainted, was also deeply torn between her loyalty to her American relations and her husband, General Thomas Gage, which led her to an unwilling betrayal. An exciting piece of news, there is a Christian action-adventure movie being filmed at this moment called Beyond the Mask.....and it is set in the colonial era!! ReplyDeleteSo very happy to be here! The trip took an unexpected turn as we had problems with the coach this morning; stuck in mud. The autumn weather in New York has taken a cooler--and much more rainy turn these last few days. I believe Mrs. Marvin can attest to that!
Mrs. Huntley-Talvis, I am so grateful to you for your patience in so many things; you are such a gracious hostess!
I was quite beside myself when Elizabeth and I were invited to this lovely gathering! But she is used to her Aunt Tess by now. I know the dear girl has arrived well ahead of me, as we left in separate coaches--she thought it better to do so considering such uncertain times.
I would like to congratulate both ladies on the release of such well-written books as Love's Reckoning and Crucible of War-- It will be a pleasure to read both series!
I see so many familiar faces....Adalia and Morgan. So very glad to see them all the way from Charleston. And she is wearing that lovely strand of black pearls! And how is it that General Carleton could join us? I'm quite pleased indeed...
I see Eden... and Jemma...and it seems Margaret has torn herself from her duties at Hope Rising too! Why it looks as if everyone has managed to come by. How delightful! Does anyone know if Elspeth has decided to stop in?
I will mingle, but I must find my niece Elizabeth, and should like to speak with Eden. But it will be difficult to avoid the temptation of that delicious looking cake. I must have a cup of sassafras tea first!
Oh, Aunt Tess, I was so worried about you! I'm so sorry to hear the coach got stuck, but with this rainy weather I'm not surprised. I'm so relieved that you've arrived safely. Do sit by the fire and have a cup of tea and slice of cake to restore yourself. Silas Ballentyne has taken a brief break, but I believe he'll be back shortly to play the fiddle for us again. And how I wish Jonathan were here to join him! The two of them play more sweetly than any mortal I've ever heard. It's surely the music of heaven!

I'm joining in your wishful thinking, Aunt Tess. lol! Jonathan is unfortunately very engaged in the campaign to stop General Burgoyne from taking Albany and moving down the Hudson to New York to split our colonies in twain, so he cannot get away for more pleasant pursuits. I'm traveling directly to join the Rangers at Bemis Heights when I leave here. Indeed, I also promised to attend Blue Sky when her and Charles's baby is born, so I must hasten to reach them soon as she is due to deliver very shortly. Should my parents and Abby arrive at Boston before I do, please do give them my deepest love and assure them I'll be on my way home as soon as possible!

DeleteI have heard so many things about these two books! It seems that so many people are excited for them! I have never read any books by Laura Frantz or J M Hochstetler myself, but Katie McCurdy (Legacy of a Writer) says they are both very excellent. Theses books sound very intriguing, especially Love's Reckoning.
