Pre-release giveaway for Love's Reckoning!

It's wonderful to be celebrating a new release with readers here and give a behind the pages look at this book. Thanks so much for joining me! If you'd like to be in the giveaway for a signed, first edition copy of Love's Reckoning, please leave a comment below with your email address!

Here are a few questions readers have asked about the book:

How did the idea for Love's Reckoning come to you?
I stumbled upon a bit of research that said gunsmith apprentices in Kentucky were expected to marry the master gunsmith's daughter. I was so intrigued by this and added a bit more angst to that fact by having two daughters. Both fall in love with the same man and he has to choose between them.

What research did you do for the novel?
I traveled to Pennsylvania and spent time in Philadelphia (the old city) and also Pittsburgh, both of which figure in this story. And I relied on a great many research books to add depth and authenticity.

How did you choose your character names?
Eden is much like her name - lovely and lush. Elspeth sounds a bit mischievous which fits her personality and was also very common to that time period. Silas, of course, is Biblical and sounds strong and manly, appropriate for a blacksmith. Ballantyne, his surname, is an old Scots name that isn't very common but sounds gallant, or so I hope!

Who is the cover designer and model?
Brandon Hill from Seattle. He's a remarkable designer/photographer who has created quite a few CBA and ABA covers. I'm so thrilled with his work. He's very hands on and even sent me via Revell a portfolio of period dresses and bonnets to choose from.

Is this book part of a series or a stand-alone novel?
This is the first book in a 4 book series spanning 100 years of 4 generations of the Ballantyne family.

Do you have a favorite character or scene?
I'll admit I am smitten with Silas but I tend to do that with all my heroes! As for a favorite scene, I love, love, love Chapter 32. But no spoilers for you:)!

Do you have any other questions about Love's Reckoning?
I'll be happy to answer them!

Please leave a question/comment below with your email address if you'd like to be entered in the giveaway! Thanks!

  1. Good morning Laura, I like the sound of this story, I am from Ky and am told that my grandfather worked in a blacksmith shop. I like the names of your characters and would be interested in a series read of this place-time and people...

    1. Hi Paula, So good to meet another Kentuckian and learn that your grandfather worked in a blacksmith shop! A smithy was such an interesting place, the heart of the community in some respects as it furnished so much that enabled men and women to do their work. And it required a great deal of skill. I hope you enjoy the story should you read it. Thanks so much for entering the drawing!

  7. Yay! I am so happy and thrilled that this book is almost here! I am happy to report that Amazon says my copy arrives Wednesday (which Im thankful for...I also have a dreaded dentist appt that day, so it will be good to have a treat that day!)
I LOVE the cover...it is a gorgeous piece of art in itself. And since I've already ordered the book, I will out of the contest so another reader can get a chance to enjoy it. But I'm sure I have some questions! Let's see...

-How are your hero/Heroines different than the leads of your previous books?

-Most of your other books take place in Kentucky, what made you choose Pennsylvania for this book? And will Kentucky figure in the story in any way?

Congrats, Laura! Cant wait to read it!~

  8. Heather, Oh, a new book sure negates dental dread, for sure:) I have an appt. coming up myself soon. LOVE your questions.

My heroine in this book is not the fiesty, take charge kind so common to historical fiction. She's more true to the time period and her circumstances. My hero is different in that he is the template for so many immigrants who came to America in the colonial period. He has nothing and has to fight for everything. In a sense these characters are the backbone of early America and are representative of our ancestors. Hope that makes sense.

My editor, lol, came up with Pittsburgh specifically. My first reaction was "WHAT?" I knew very little about Pittsburgh and warmed more to Philadelphia which is also in the story. Little did I know, Pittsburgh is a treaure trove of history in a far different way than Philly. A wonderful foil! And it didn't hurt that my college roommate lives there. I love Pennsylvania for many reasons. It's similar to KY and my hero, Daniel Boone, was born there.

So good to see you here, Heather. You always inspire and make me smile:)

As I was typing my comment above, I thought about that letter, and what a wonderful friendship has come of it. I don't even have a clue to this day how I got in touch with you! Did I send it to the publishing co? Seems like I did, b/c I remember telling hubby she'll probably never even get this. God is good!

  10. Laura, so happy to hop over and learn more about Love's Reckoning! I'm still swooning over Silas and the hint of his Scottish accent. :) I can't believe I have to wait another year before I learn more about Ellie and Jack, but I appreciate the teaser at the back of LR.

I'm curious where you came up with the idea to do a four generation saga? That will bring you much farther into the future than your other books, ye ken? :)

    1. Gabrielle, You spoil me!! I just had a wonderful time reading your commments over at my site. A fine way to start the morning:)

I'm glad you appreciated the teaser about Ellie and Jack at the back of LR. When my publisher asked me about doing that, I was a little unsure, though I know it's done often in the general market. I didn't want it to be a spoiler but of course I said that was fine.

Love that you find Silas swoon-worthy:) I sure love him, too! It was fun aging him and bringing him into book 2, due next week to my editor. And it was also very enjoyable creating Ellie, his daughter.

The leap in time frames is quite challenging. My head editor asked to write about legacies in this saga. There seemed to be a gap in the market for generational sagas and she thought this might work well. I am familiar with the 19th-century - the coming stories are set in 1822, 1850, and 1874. But I'm more familiar with the 18th-century and feel most at home there. When you change centuries and even decades, EVERYTHING changes - language, dress, customs, politics, etc. So my reasearch is more intense than ever. But since I love research almost as much as writing, it doesn't feel like work:) Thank heavens!

Ye ken, indeed:) We are kindred spirits, my faithful friend!!

Oh, I so wish I could help you decide! The Frontiersman's Daughter is truly historical ficton and is a meandering tale that isn't typical of the CBA. The Colonel's Lady is more historical romance and is a tighter, plot-driven story. You could always start with TCL and work backwards:) I just pray you enjoy them all when you have time for them.

Love your questions. You have a writer's heart. My fav part of the writing process is that messy first draft, when the words are flowing and characters are coming out of the woodwork and surprising and delighting me:) Nothing quite like it! I love all my babies - er, books - but I must say, I think The Colonel's Lady was the most joyful. Someone else seemed to be pushing the pen, so to speak, as everything came together in a way I hadn't anticipated. Wish I could do that over again!

Smiles back to you, dear Ganise. Would love for you to win!!

  19. Oh, I love that Silas has a Scottish background, and I can't wait to meet him and Eden! 1. Gwen, So happy you're here:) The first of my many giveaways! Yes, those Scots heroes are the best, even if they don't always come in a kilt, lol. Good question about the series. In the back of Love's Reckoning you'll see the prologue and first chapter of the next book. The leap in time is from 1793 to 1822 so in book 2 you'll meet the children of the hero and heroine in book 1. Each book showcases a different generation but most of the characters in previous books also appear. I just had to age and mature them - quite a challenge! And leap 25 years or so each book. Whew! I pray they bless you, every one!

For this one I was able to choose the woman's clothing and shawl and also tell them about the background with river and woods. But they pretty much take care of all the rest, matching the tone or mood of the cover with my book, getting the right expression on the model's face, etc. They're very good at getting the character's eye and hair color right and so on. And I'm so grateful! I've actually seen books where the cover person doesn't resemble the character. Oh my!

  33. Wonderful post, Laura! I love getting more insight into your novels, characters, stories, etc.!

I thought The Ballantyne Legacy was a 3 book series -- how exciting to find out that it has 4 books! And I love that it spans four generations into the 19th century -- you KNOW I love the mid to late 1800's. ;-)

I've been wondering, do you know the direction your story will go when you start writing? Do you have the beginning, middle, and end set before you get started, or does it transform and change as you go along?

I already have a copy of the book, so no need to enter me in the giveaway. : )

    1. Michelle, Oh, so love seeing you at CQ!! You always make my day wherever you are or appear:) I remember that you love that late 19th-century period - and you're not alone. It's said to be the most popular in historical fiction, one of the reasons writers are encouraged to write books in that time frame.

I'm used to be one of those seat of the pants writers, with no planning whatsoever, just give me a legal pad and pen and I'll fill it up:) But since submitting the proposal for the Ballantyne series, I had to provide a detailed synopsis for each story. Hard for this panster to do! Thankfully, my editors let me have creative leeway. Sometimes the story takes a very different direction and they're fine with that. I imagine if I got to squirrely they'd rein me in but so far, so good.

For example, I'm starting Ballantyne book 3 now set in 1850. My hero was supposed to be a cowboy type as that is when the wild west started opening up. But nope, I started writing and he suddenly appeared in the pilothouse of a steamboat:) I even had to change his name...

I always pray about my stories. The Spirit often takes you places you never dreamed of. A bit of heaven on earth:)

  42. I would love to read all these comments, questions and answers, but I don't want even a "hint" of a spoiler before I read "Love's Reckoning". I bought my copy last Wednesday, (while we were traveling) off the "to be shelved" cart at a Family Christian Store. I can't wait to read it, but have been falling asleep too early at night to read!! Hate it when that happens! As soon as life slows down and I can come in for a landing I will relish reading "Love's Reckoning." When a new book comes out by one of my favorite authors it is an exciting time for an avid reader. Thank you, Laura, for the prayer, thought, effort and work you put in to writing and launching a new book for us.
