MaryLu Tyndall Veil of Pearls Launch Soiree - A Charleston "Event"

1812 Charleston

A Charleston "event" with the cream of society.

Welcome to the Shaftesbury soiree!  There shall be dinner and dancing and plenty of refreshments as well as good conversation with the Charleston elite.  Of course the event is by invitation only and only the best of Charleston have been invited. For instance, I hear the handsome Rutledge brothers are coming all the way from their plantation. I do hear that the younger son, Morgan, is bringing a surprise guest tonight, a lady who has only recently arrived in Charleston. Oh, I do hope her family is well placed and she has good connections. I would hate to have a mere commoner among us. But then again, Morgan has impeccable taste so I'm quite sure the lady measures up. Even so, I have heard rumors there will be those who do not belong to our society trying to sneak into the party. Interlopers!  So, let's do be on the lookout.

So, do come in and join the festivities!  Have some strawberry cake and basil lemonade!

One must have shrimp when in Charleston!

And wear your favorite gown!!
Regency gown c. 1810 that you will see Gwyneth Fairchild in! Inspired by the styles of the Orient

This is the gown Lilyan Cameron wore for her wedding to the dashing Captain Nicholas Xanthakos.  It and the mantilla were loaned to her by the other camp followers of General Francis Marion's partisans. I'm wearing it in honor of the lovely Lilyan, a true patriot and courageous backcountry South Carolina woman. (SFC)

The gown above belongs to Mariah Wenham of Summerville, South Carolina.  It is a tad old fashioned but quite cool for today's stifling weather. (CFP) The pearls are lovely and subtle.  And of course, they don't clash with Adelia's gorgeous black pearls!

Book giveaway:  Leave a comment and your email address for a chance to win either a paperback or an ebook copy of Veil of Pearls.  Pat Iaccuzzi has a lovely doll with a tiny black "pearl" necklace as a giveaway!

  1. I am most excited to attend this soiree and esp. to steal a peek at Morgan Rutledge and his special lady. I have never been to Charleston, but in reading Veil of Pearls I feel like I know the town and its society intimately. I am loving this book! Huzzah to MaryLu Tyndall for a wonderfully entertaining and heart-wrenching story.

  2. Welcome to the party Lisa!! Would you care for some sweet cakes and lemonade? If you've never been to Charleston, you must put it on your list! You can feel the history in the air when you walk the cobblestone streets of the historic district! Well, pull up a chair and have some refreshments, and thanks for coming!

  3. What a privilege to be invited to the Shaftesbury soiree.

Congrats on another beautifully written novel, MaryLu.
Please do not enter me in the drawing since I already own a copy.

  4. I fear I have been detained outside of Charleston, by pressing business concerns. I expect to arrive at the Wenhams' home on the Ashley shortly. Mariah shall have me fixed up in a flash. Did the flowers I ordered arrive? Love gardenias, roses, and carnations and hope you do, too, MaryLu! Please tell me the mechanical fans are being used!

  5. Yes, indeed, dearest, the mechanical fans are in operation and keeping the Shaftesbury townhome nice and cool! Flowers? Yes, they have arrived. I had my housekeeper set them about the parlor and dining room. They are gorgeous and the entire home smells so sweet. Thank you! I look forward to your arrival!

  6. Not to worry, Carrie. I shall be in carriage behind yours and I am bringing two large ostrich and three peacock fans. I'm sure the delicious food, refreshments and amiable conversation will distract us from the hot and humid Charleston summer.

    1. JANET, I should love to have one of the fans! I so hope Mariah Wenham still has the gold silk gown she offered me last spring. I shall cry if she does not. And my triple pearl strand is broken, so I shall need to borrow that as well. If I know Mariah, however, I shan't doubt she'll come on to the party without me--and with several men trailing behind her.

  7. How kind of you to receive me! Gwyneth Fairchild here. I have only recently arrived from London, through the open port of Annapolis--one of the few from which ships can still sail through the blockade, I'm told. Though still startled to find myself on American soil at all with our nations so at odds, it's nevertheless an immense pleasure to be here to celebrate your wonderful novel, Mrs. Tyndall!

I am reading VEIL OF PEARLS now and loving every moment of it. Now, where is this handsome Morgan Rutledge?? I would so like a peek at the man who has set Adalia's heart all aflutter.

    1. Oh GWYNETH, I believe you'll be wearing the gorgeous gown you acquired last month. Can't wait to see it in person. The blockade runners are so very brave. What would we do without them--no frills at all I fear.

    2. Welcome Ms. Fairchild! How nice to see you!! My, what a lovely gown you are wearing. You must be exhausted from your long journey. Do come sit and have some fresh lemonade. It is sad to hear our countries are quarreling again, isn't it? The Rutledges are due here any minute.. those handsome rogues are quite the life of the party, you know.. but they always make a late appearance. :-) I hear Morgan is bringing a new lady today. I'm simply dying to meet her. Word is she isn't one of "us", if you know what I mean. ;-)

  9. Hello, all! I'm so happy to visit with you and would love a glass of lemonade. It's much cooler in Charleston than I expected. At my home in Columbia, it's so hot that we ladies are confined to our vapors couches. But the ocean breezes here in Charleston are quite refreshing. Are those dashing Rutledge boys really going to join us? They do make one's heart flitter. But I must admit, not as much as Nicholas Xanthakos. One could get lost in those bold topaz eyes, though he has eyes only for his Lilyan. Did you see the picture of her wedding dress?

  11. Good afternoon, ladies, so nice of you to invite me to such a wonderful Soiree. I see that only the best of the best is here. As for young Mr. Morgan, I am so hoping that he will take the time to dance with me and not let his new 'friend' occupy all of his time. I've heard some things about this young lady and I intend to see for myself if they are true. As Chaplain, I must make sure that young Morgan make only wise choices. I've heard through the grapevine, that I should not partake of any refreshments given by a certain gentleman, if you can call him that. Thank you, ever so much, I feel absolutely special being among all you wonderful ladies!

    1. So good to see you, Chaplain!! I've heard Morgan is quite taken with this lady, but I'm sure he will reserve a dance for you. Plus, it will give you time to question him on her. I do hope she comes from a good family, well educated and positioned in society! Indeed (I lean in to whisper) I have heard some ladies had to leave, their heads aspin, due to accepting drinks from this vile man. Do be on your guard!

    2. I shall, in deed, be on my guard. It wouldn't do for a Chaplain to be put on display like that. Do check in on me now and then to make sure I am okay, dear, I would so appreciate it. Now, I am off to have some of that cake, I rarely get any at my home these days. *hugs*

  13. I'm looking for Mariah Wenham, who left without me when I tarried too long with my preparations! I see her there in her muslin ensemble and lovely pearls.

Fortunately for me, Maj. General Andrew Jackson stopped by the plantation and accompanied me to this event. He is taking a break from his duties in Tennessee. Here is what he has to say "This place (Charleston) reminds me of my mother, who died here during the Revolutionary War. Sadly, I lost all my family during that war and was orphaned at age 14. I am ready to show those British that they chose the wrong time to pick a fight with we Americans. I'll fight especially hard knowing these scars are here (on my hand and head) because I refused to clean a British officer's boots and he slashed me with his sword. Well, I want--can someone please tell me where the cake and punch are?"

And just in time for a lovely lunch, I see. I am thrilled to wear the new straw hat I bought.

This will be my first basil lemonade and it couldn't be any better for a day like this. Though Savannah holds my heart first, Charleston's Battery is one of the loveliest walks I know-- and meant to be enjoyed on the arm of a man in uniform. I am keeping my eyes open!

Congratulations MaryLu! I feel like this book has been out for awhile for it as been such a topic of anticipation ...in all the right circles!

thank you all for your lovely hospitality today!

    1. Oh my--my escort Maj. General Andrew Jackson fears you may be a spy! He says "You better not be a spy because I hear those Canadians are mostly British now and have deep allegiances to the crown. It would be impolite to check you to see if you are a spy so you are lucky that I won't do it. And I'll offer to get you some lemonade so I can keep an eye on you and I'll watch where you are going when you leave the party."

Heavens! I hope he won't start and international incident! To which he says, "What's wrong with an international incident!"

    2. Welcome Miss Marvin! But do be careful of Major Jackson.. I hear he's quite tough on British sympathizers!! Perhaps we need to keep you away from him as much as possible. Oh dear, I would hate for my party to be ruined by an incident!!

    3. General Jackson says, "I'm right behind you! I will simply turn her into the authorities if I acquire the right evidence."

    4. Oh my dear General Jackson, you need not worry about me. I barely spoke to any of those handsome British soldiers and sailors, though I do have a habit of asking pointed questions. With the war barely a month old, even the citizens of both countries along the Niagara Frontier are unsure of whom to trust so I understand your concern.

Let us put thoughts of war aside and enjoy the graciousness of our hostess, shall we?

But we must not complain for God gives us these days to bear and to enjoy. So delighted to be invited to your love soiree. My gown is quite crushed from the journey - the coach was atrocious.

I thought I would come down to Charleston to get a look at the more genteel life. I must say there is a definite difference in the classes in your society. I don't care what the other ladies at the soiree say about Miss Winston! I love her spunk! 20. How do you do, Ladies...

Thank you for inviting me, Madam Tyndall! Yes--you have it-- I am Lady Patricia Winfield, and my countrywomen across the pond are quite excited about your latest release, Veil of Pearls! They were quite excited when I told them I was to meet you in person and they send you their best.

My husband, the Lord Herald Winfield feels such a book is scandalous however, because it dwells on the second war of independence for the colonies--and romance too! He would ahve been happier to bury his nose in a book in the tactics of war, I'm sure. more So I have challenged him to look through it and see for himself that it carries a fine message of hope and inspiration as well.

Needless to say, all my friends who have read it are excessively fond of your books, my dear!

Oh, I say--and who is this chap--Andrew Jackson, you say? Wont you be a good sort of fellow and bring me a tall glass of that delicious looking lemonade? Now there's a dear!

It's so gratifying to see you colonials are tending to your children's manners and the King's English continues to be taught. I must say, he looks to be a fine young man, though a bit reluctant to recognize his betters. Oh... please excuse me, I believe I see Mrs. Madison! She's quite the dance, I hear.
I on the other hand, am not.

    1. Major General Jackson is here as a guest but I shall ask a servant to bring you some lemonade. General Jackson says, "So you're an Englishwoman but you sympathize with the American cause. Is that right? I feel like challenging your husband to a duel of honor for insulting we Americans--the book is not scandalous although he says it is. And that is why I want to challenge him to a duel."

Oh my, I believe General Jackson has become quite upset at being in the city where his dear mother died, which he attributes to the English. Let me go ply him with cake!

    2. So good to see you, Lady Winfield! And all the way from across the pond. My word, I do hope General Jackson (Whoops, I do fear I've been calling him Major. I hope he hasn't heard!) will not be offended by your presence!! He becomes quite volatile when discussing British interest in their former colonies. Oh my, I believe he's heading over.. But in the meantime, I wish to thank you so much for your kind words about my books. Did you say Mrs. Madison was here? My, but my party has attracted some highly significant people. I'm all aflutter!!! General Jackson, stop that at once. You will not draw your sword on Lady Windfield!

      Delete
    3. General Jackson claims he was merely demonstrating what he will do to Lord Winfield! He says he's sorry for frightening Lady Winfield (but I'm not so sure!) Yes, he is quite volatile about the British with good reason, since he holds them responsible for destroying his family and scarring him. Poor man.

  22. Lady Pat, you really must meet Andrew Jackson. Why he is the most sickly looking gentleman (and I say that loosly - because sometimes he is quite barbaric). But he fights for our freedoms and is working so diligently to expand our borders. The English, the Spanish, and the Indians simply fear him and know he will fight to the end and most likely win.

If another gentleman errs in his conduct around Mr. Jackson, well, Old Hickory simply challenges him to a duel.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ah, VERA, I see you are well acquainted with General Jackson. He says, "You're right! The Spanish and Indians fear me because I will fight them and most likely win. So that is why my enemies don't want to challenge me to a duel because I am the best shot in the world."

I fear since Andy lost his mother when he was so young that she was unable to help him with a good dose of humility.

  27. I am a great admirer of General Jackson and especially his mother, Elizabeth, who was a quintessential South Carolina backcountry woman. She was a woman of great courage, high purpose, and enormous inner strength. Her actions showed her to be strong-willed, pious, hard working, determined, resourceful, resilient, and compassionate.
When Andrew was a young man, she hoped he would attend seminary. But alas, his fiery, passionate personality took him in other directions. The red hair, I imagine.
The general credits the following advice to his dear mother, “To forget an obligation or be ungrateful for a kindness is a base crime, not merely a fault or a sin, but an actual crime. Men guilty of it sooner or later must suffer the penalty. In personal conduct be always polite but never obsequious. None will respect you more than you respect yourself. Avoid quarrels as long as you can without yielding to imposition. But sustain your manhood always.”

  32. Well, I have made my way about the room again, and though I've met some delightful people, I must say Mr. Jackson is quite frightening! "In personal conduct be always polite but never obsequious." Indeed! Such behaviour would never be allowed in English drawing rooms.

But, it seems there is always some rowdiness displayed at every soiree or gathering in the colonies. Why, I recall one such incident at a party where a Mr. Reed had someone by the name of Snyder kidnapped! And I believe you were the one who had given the party, Mrs. Tyndall!

That is why I always see quite sensational headlines the next morning in the Charleston papers about your gatherings. Quite exciting, I must say!

I believe I'm beginning to thoroughly enjoy myself and will have much to tell when I return home. I too would like to speak with that handsome young man Morgan, and the young lady he brought with him, Miss Adalia.

    Yes, indeed--quite refreshing!

    1. My dearest Lady Winfield, I must admit that yes, we Americans, do enjoy a bit of rowdiness now and then.. especially at parties, as you well remember with Mr. Snyder! Of course, that rascal had it coming, don't you agree? We simply had to get him out of the way of true love!

I just knew you had some American in you and not all that stodgy stuffiness you Brits are known for. Ah.. yes.. I see Morgan and Adalia.. please follow me and I'll introduce you!

WHOO-HOO, MARYLU, HAPPY LAUNCH DAY, MY FRIEND!!! I AM so excited to see this book release because it is one of the most exciting books this year in the CBA, in my humble opinion and flat-out FABULOUS!! The cover, the setting (LOVE Charleston!!), the characters, the story, the ROMANCE!!! And all written by one of my very favorite people in the whole wide world!! I pray it flies off the shelves, my friend!!

Carrie -- FAB party as always, but get me away from the strawberry cake, PLEASE!! Even my Fitness Pal app doesn't count calories that high ... :)

    2. JULIE!!! I am afraid I collapsed from my rheumatism shortly after encouraging General Jackson to retire last evening. I am ever so grateful to Adalia bringing a tray of ham biscuits and sweet tea up to my bed chamber this afternoon. The General looked in on me, too, and I fear he missed his day camp--must be some kind of military encampment or such, by attending me today. Well, I fear I must lie down again. Perhaps these southern soirees are too taxing for a matron of my years! Ah, there is Miss Wenham, a relation of mine (although my Wenhams still live across the pond and please do not let Andrew Jackson get wind of that information, who knows what he'd do--probably accuse me of being a spy, too!)

Please sample the food and let me find a suitable dance partner for you. Perhaps Hadley Rutledge. He does love the beautiful ladies!

  46. Oh this is most delightful!! MaryLu, I do thank you for your gracious invitation to this most exquisite of parties. The gowns take my breathe away, the food makes me want to loosen my corset, (but we shall keep such scandalous talk between to two of us) and the music is so delightful. This is all and more than I expected my first party here in Charleston to be. Please forgive my late entrance to this superb gathering. (I dare to admit I've always had a thing for making a more discrete entrance. It does give one an advantage in surveying the room and guests for the most approachable guests to acquaint myself with.)However, now that I have arrived I dare say this will be a most delightful event with some of the most lovely of guests to mingle with. I do love to dance and hope there is still someone available to accompany me to the dance floor. Well, the good Captain has offered to get me some lemonade so I must go. Again MaryLu, my deepest gratitude for the invitation.

  48. Well, I am back my dears. I had to get some rest, my old bones aren't as bouncy as they used to be. So, has anyone seen this young lady Morgan brought? I didn't have a chance to spy her before I left. I must know if she is a good fit for the young man. We must not let him fall for the wrong person. Oh dear, I am parched. I had to walk a few blocks getting here, because my carriage lost a wheel. Not to worry, I am quite well, just a bit shaken up. Let me get myself some lemonade and someone can tell me about this Miss Adalia.

    1. Welcome back, Chaplain!! Haven't you met Miss Adalia yet? Oh, I know she's here somewhere. But I must say, she is of common birth I'm told..hailing from simple farmers on Jamaica. And she works for a living! Can you imagine? What Morgan sees in her when there are so many lovely accomplished genteel ladies here is beyond me. Those Rutledge boys were always rascals!!
So sorry about your carriage dear. Let's go fetch some lemonade and I'll introduce you to Adalia...

    2. Thank you ever so much, Lady Tyndall, I can't wait to see what all the fuss it about. What ever are we going to do about this young lady? I do believe someone should speak to young Rutledge and set him straight. I've heard that it's so difficult to keep a rein on those Rutledge boys. I must speak with the both of them. They are at an age where they should be settling down with a proper lady and starting a family. Well, let's be off to the lemonade and then to meet this young Adalia.

  51. Hello all, I have returned for yet another wonderful day with this group of fascinating people. My companion today is my husband, Jack. He is an old salt that sails on the ship Redemption. I had to clean him up a bit for this occasion, his daily attire is not for the faint of heart. He has been regaling me with tales of the seas and how war seems imminent. I do fear for his safety when he is gone, but what's a Chaplain to do? He is always in my prayers. But, enough of this, I wish to introduce him to a few people and try to forget that he will be shipping out again very soon. Jack, dear, this is Lady Tyndall, our most gracious hostess.
Jack: It is a pleasure to be here, Lady Tyndall, my wife has told me how much she has enjoyed this event. Thank you so much for keeping an eye on her. I hear that some guests are given to drinking a bit much at these functions and I wish for my wife to be safe from some of the most lecherous sorts. Speaking of my wife, where did the Chaplain disappear to? Oh, there she is, getting us some the the lemonade she has been going on about. Will you excuse me, Lady Tyndall, while I join my wife? Very nice to see you. By your leave............

Do enjoy the lemonade, Sir Jack, as well as the other refreshments!! And watch out for the Rutledge brothers. I hear they are up to no good!

  53. Charleston is not only a beautiful city, but it is my birth city. Whenever I can visit, I do. Last week, I was there for a few days and spent time in the South Carolina Historical Historical Society building. I had the opportunity to not only hold but read a small book that was published in 1835. As I read it,it honestly gave me chills at the history I was holding. This book sounds delightful and full of some of the real people that I am fascinated by.It is going to have to be my next read!

Even though I don't have an invitation to this soiree, I believe I will crash the party. (Maybe no one will notice!) I have been just dying to meet the dashing Andrew Jackson; he has such a presence. It must be hard for him to visit Charleston, since his mother died here of a fever she caught nursing her nephew on one of the prison ships during the War. I understand he is still searching for her grave. Such a pity!

The humidity here is so frightful; my hair is curling, and I am "glowing." Where is that lemonade?!?

    1. Ahem...Lady Sheila I presume? Welcome to the party. I know you intended to not get noticed, but there are eyes everywhere here. One must be careful what one says as well, there are ears everywhere as well. I am Chaplain Debbie and I have yet to meet Mr. Jackson, so maybe we can meet him together. My husband is about somewhere, he keeps running off. Yes, the humidity is terrible, but I think your hair is fabulous. The curls add to it's flair, if I may say so myself. Now, first's things first. Let us get you some lemonade and then we shall make our way over to Mr. Jackson....shall we?

    2. Your birth city, Lady Sheila! How fortunate you are! And to hold such a precious historical book in your hands!! How exciting. And I do hope you find the General.
